WOMEN’S GOLF
The Huntington women’s golf team was back in action over the weekend at the Taylor University hosted Players Club Invitational. After posting a 352 on Friday, the Foresters turned in a 360 in round two to finish with a 712 for sixth place out of eight teams.
Betsy Schroeder (84-82) and Alexandria Maris (82-84) both fired a 166 to lead Sholund’s crew and share the 16th spot out of 45 golfers.
“Betsy is really close to posting the scores she is capable of and striving for,” said Coach Sholund. “After a double bogey start on the toughest hole at The Players Club she fought back to even par after seven. This shows what she is able to do and the more she puts herself in that position, I believe she will finish those rounds out in better fashion.”
Sholund is also excited about Maris’ play. “Alexandria had a similar start and was able to bounce back to post a solid score. She is really playing well from tee to green. When she managers her mistakes she makes a lot of pars and is able to keep big numbers off the card.”
Rachel Blauert carded a 181 (85-96) to claim 28th. Katie Springer posted a 202 by shooting a 101 both days while Alayna Steely played just the second round where she turned in a 98.
“Rachel posted a strong score in round one and as with Betsy and Alex, got off to a rough start in round two,” said Sholund. “Rachel is a very strong player and is leading our team in effort, if she can believe in herself more on the course, better rounds are near.”
Taylor kept the title at home by firing a 603 followed by UNOH (615), Asbury ( 647), Purdue Northwest (690), Mount Vernon (700), HU (712), Holy Cross (730) and IU South Bend (766).
“This was a short turnaround for us and there are many positives to take away from this event,” said Sholund. “The team is working hard and we are learning to recover from bad holes and becoming mentally tougher which is exciting for our program.
“Now that we have a break for a couple of weeks the team will focus improving from 100 yards in and around the greens as we prepare for our next event.”
The Foresters have a few weeks off before competing in the Bill Bockwitz Classic on September 30-October 1.
