MEN’S GOLF

The HU men’s golf team turned in a 644 (320-324) at the Players Club Invitational hosted by Taylor University to finish 11th out of 12 teams.

Logan De Maa fired a one-over-par 73 on Saturday on the way to posting a 151 overall to pace his team with his 18th place finish out of 63 golfers.

“Logan bounced back from an uneventful first round in which he got very little out of a strong ball striking day,” noted Coach Sholund. “He has been focused on his mental game and halting negative momentum quickly. I see this taking place in his game on an almost daily basis.

“He works very hard I am excited to see that effort pay off for this team.”

David Beck carded a 163 (77-86) while Keith Mineer finished one stroke back at 164 (81-83). Otto Bjartmarz shot a 166 (84-82) to round out HU’s scoring. Carter Roseboom turned in a 181 (89-92).

Of Beck, Sholund had this to say. “David led the way for us on Friday with his lowest score as a Forester. He is starting to gain confidence. When he trusts what he is working on more his scores will become more consistent.

“I am really proud of his effort and focus this year.”

Purdue Northwest won the men’s title with a (300) followed by Taylor (581), Holy Cross (587), Wheaton (604), Asbury (604), St. Xavier (607), Taylor B (613), Mount Vernon (614), Indiana Tech (615), Holy Cross B (623), HU (644) and IU South Bend (645).

“As a whole, our short games must get better if we want to move up the scoreboard,” said Sholund. “This team is close with each other and that will help our ability to focus on the right things as a program. They are bunch of great guys that love the game and want to get better, and they will.”

The Foresters next tournament is the Bill Bockwitz Classic on September 23-24.
