SOFTBALL

The Forester softball team stayed hot Saturday afternoon, sweeping Goshen 9-0 and 11-6 at the GC Softball Complex to complete the season series sweep, 4-0. With the pair of wins, Huntington improves to 25-19 overall and 17-15 in Crossroads League play.

Game 1 – Huntington 9, Goshen 0 (5 innings)
Game one was all Huntington from the jump.

Kinzie Mollenkopf spun a gem, tossing a five-inning complete-game shutout while scattering four hits, walking none and striking out three on just 66 pitches.

The Foresters backed her with efficient offense, plating nine runs on eight hits while taking advantage of four walks, two hit batters and multiple Goshen miscues.

Maddie Duvall got things started with an RBI single in the first before Khloee Gregory added another run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Gaby Hypes chipped in an RBI single in the second after which a Goshen throwing error led to Coach Averill’s crew touching home twice for an early 5-0 lead.

Huntington continued to apply pressure in the fourth, scoring three more runs highlighted by Josslynn Harbert’s RBI single. Maddie Duvall finished with two RBI, while Hypes, Gregory, Harbert and Kylie Fisher each drove in a run.

At the top of the order, Makinzie Kline and Jess Duvall each scored twice, with Jess adding a pair of hits. The Foresters also swiped three bags and used small ball to perfection to secure the run-rule victory.

Game 2 – Huntington 11, Goshen 6
Game two turned into an offensive showcase.

Huntington exploded for 11 runs on 15 hits, with production up and down the lineup to fend off Goshen’s early push. The Foresters and Maple Leafs traded blows early before HU took control, outscoring the hosts 5-1 over the final four innings.

The Duvall sisters led the charge. Jess Duvall went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Maddie Duvall drove in four runs, highlighted by a two-run homer in the third as part of her two-hit day.

Gaby Hypes added to the fireworks with her first collegiate home run, finishing with two RBI, while Carli Tharp delivered two run-scoring hits. Harbert also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

In the circle, the Haselby sisters combined to secure the win. Natalie Haselby struck out three over the first three innings before Bethany Haselby took over and steadied things, allowing just one run over the final four frames to earn the victory.

The Foresters hit the road again Tuesday to league-leading Saint Francis for a 3:00 p.m. opening pitch.
