Lewis Steps Down as HU Women’s Soccer Coach

After more than three decades of coaching, with the last six years as the head coach of the Huntington women’s soccer program, David Lewis has stepped down from coaching. Lewis will continue teaching sports management courses for the University.

“It has been a privilege to serve alongside the HU coaches and athletic department staff,” said Lewis. “I appreciate the Christ-centered leadership of our athletic director Lori Culler. I encourage the members of the women’s soccer team to fix the eyes of your hearts on Jesus — to wholeheartedly seek and faithfully serve Him … Colossians 3:23.”

During his tenure at Huntington, Lewis’ athletes have claimed 11 All-Conference honors and 66 NAIA Scholar Athlete accolades. Lewis came to HU after spending 28 years at the helm of the Houghton College women’s soccer program, where he guided the Highlanders to an average of over 14 wins per year. His career coaching record stands at 426-186-51.

“I want to thank David for his unwavering dedication, passion, and countless hours spent shaping not just skilled players, but strong, faithful women who use their gifts and talents to bring glory to the Lord,” said Culler. “His sphere of influence has extended far beyond the field, touching the lives of his athletes and their families, the athletic staff, HU students and the Huntington community.

“His ultimate desire to grow the Kingdom will continue to make an impact as those he has mentored carry on the call to go and make disciples.”

His coaching résumé includes 12 trips to the NAIA National Championships, which includes a string of nine years in a row from 2003-2011. Lewis guided his team to the Elite Eight in 2005 and 2006 and six times landed a spot in the Sweet Sixteen. Lewis held the national record for career coaching wins in NAIA women’s soccer history (326) from 2005-2014 and wraps up his coaching with a career winning percentage of .681.

Lewis’s impact extends beyond the pitch. He was the lead author of the collegiate textbook Sports Ministry, a 2024 publication of Human Kinetics. He is an ordained minister and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in religion/philosophy from The King’s College as well as Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

A national search for his replacement will begin after the holidays.
