HU’s disc golf course gets an update

There has been a lot of work done on HU’s disc golf course recently, with a big community response to our changes. The month of July tracked 224 scored rounds in UDisc (most popular disc golf scoring app), which far, far exceeds any amount of scored traffic we have had before. This also doesn’t account for any non-scored rounds (which there have been a LOT of).

A little backstory…the previous course had been established in 2013, and as disc golf has been growing in popularity, the reviews haven’t been kind to us. The course was seen as unsafe and virtually unplayable during the academic year. Multiple holes had you throwing over roads, parking lots, and our busiest sidewalks. In fact, Luke Fetters was even telling me the other day how he was in a classroom in the old Ad building and had a disc come flying through an open window!

Needless to say, it was time for a change.

Last year a plan was set into motion to make some major changes to the course, with the primary concern being safety. After about ten design iterations and many, many emails with Russ Degitz and Marcy Nofziger, we arrived at an agreed upon new layout. Spurred on by the upcoming UB National Conference, the new design was completed and playable within two to three weeks. The new layout is safer, more beginner/family friendly, and has been very well received by the community.

There is still fundraising and work to be done as we clean up old basket locations, remove old tee pads, install new tee pads, etc., but we are optimistic the future is looking bright for disc golf (and HU’s Disc Golf Club) on campus! You can view the new layout at www.huntington.edu/DiscGolf.

We’re planning on hosting a tournament on Saturday, September 30, so watch for more details on how you can join.

Oh…and if you haven’t seen it — take a quick walk out to the basket location of hole #6 (cut into the wooded area behind the parking lot between Becker and Loew-Brenn Halls) to see some of the awesome work that has been done.
