MEN’S SOCCER

Senior defender Kovan Drenth provided the breakthrough just past the hour mark, heading home the game’s lone tally Wednesday night to propel the Huntington men’s soccer team to a 1-0 Crossroads League road victory over Goshen College at the GC Soccer Complex.

The victory marks the Foresters’ first Crossroads League triumph of the season, lifting their record to 4-6-2 overall and 1-3-2 in conference action (5 league points). Goshen dropped to 2-12-1 on the season and 1-5-0 in CL play.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes that saw both backlines hold firm, Huntington broke the deadlock in the 61st minute. Jonathan Ruiz delivered a well-placed cross back from the left flank into the penalty area, where Drenth rose above the defense to nod a header past Maple Leaf goalkeeper Matias Labbe at the 60:52 mark. The goal was Drenth’s first of the season and just the second of his collegiate career for the Goshen native.

Huntington’s defense protected the clean sheet down the stretch, aided by an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks that kept sustained pressure in the attacking third. Goshen mounted late offensive pushes, including an 89th-minute header from David Hidalgo Muniain, but the Forester backline and netminder Adrian Camarena turned aside every threat to ice the victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Adrian Camarena earned the shutout win in net for Huntington, stopping both shots on goal he faced across the full 90 minutes.

Huntington finished with 10 shots, seven on frame, to Goshen’s 12 shots, two on target.
