MEN’S BASKETBALL
The #RV Huntington University men’s basketball team overcame a sluggish start to outlast Cornerstone University, 88–80, Saturday afternoon inside Mol Arena. With the win, the Foresters move to 6-1 on the season while the Golden Eagles drop to 1-3.
Both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm early, combining for just 16 points across the first eight minutes. HU finally broke free with an 8-0 run, fueled by six points from Miles Good, to build a 17–7 advantage. The Foresters maintained a double-digit edge several times before Cornerstone clawed back, ultimately sending the game into halftime knotted at 38–38.
The Golden Eagles carried that momentum into the second half, pushing ahead 53–47 by the 15-minute mark. Huntington responded with a surge of its own, sparked by a traditional three-point play from Jackson Paul that ignited a 10–3 run to flip the scoreboard to 57–54. After Cornerstone briefly tied things again, Paul’s transition layup reclaimed the lead for good.
HU stretched the margin to eight midway through the period thanks in part to a pair of triples by Cade Brenner, though Cornerstone continued to push and narrowed the gap to just one with two minutes left. From there, Good took control, scoring the game’s next six points before Landon Biegel knocked down two clutch free throws to put the game out of reach and secure HU’s fifth straight victory.
Huntington was powered by another dominant outing from Kaden Johnson, who posted 26 points on 10-for-13 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds, marking his fifth double-double in six games. Miles Good delivered in key moments, finishing with 18 points, including three triples and a 7-for-9 effort at the line, while Jackson Paul added 15 points, five boards, and two assists to steady the backcourt. Keylane Lasisi played efficiently with 8 points on perfect shooting, and Cade Brenner provided a spark off the bench with 10 points fueled by three makes from long range. As a unit, HU shot 53.8% from the field, knocked down 80.6% of its free throws, and won the battle on the glass 36–30.
Cornerstone placed four players in double figures, led by Kayden Bird with 19 points and five rebounds. Blake Stewart added 18 points, while Andy Mora contributed 14 points and five assists to anchor the Golden Eagles’ offense. Levi Schultz also posted a strong performance with 14 points and nine boards, but despite shooting 44.6% overall, Cornerstone was held to just 27.3% (6-for-22) from beyond the arc.
With the win, Huntington turns its attention to Crossroads League play, opening up on the road at Spring Arbor on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
