MEN’S SOCCER
The 24th-ranked Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands escaped King Stadium with a 2-1 win over the Huntington men’s soccer team Wednesday evening at King Stadium.
It was an early penalty kick that proved the difference in an otherwise battle of the wills that saw both squads generate 13 shots with six on frame. The guests’ PK came just over 12 minutes in for a quick advantage that stood the test of time.
The Patriots struck again in the 32nd minute for a 2-0 lead that was cut in half with six minutes left in the first period when Kovan Drenth found Sam Dolobaipu who, after bulldozing his way past several defenders, lasered a shot side netting for a 2-1 difference.
The final 45 minutes was a bloodbath with HU in desperation of the equalizer while the Patriots were just as passionate to preserve the win. While the intensity was palpable on both sides, the scoreboard remained at 2-1 when the final horn sounded. The Foresters tipped the scale in corner kicks 7-2 with all but one coming in the second half.
Dan Pellegrine took the loss in net. The senior keeper finished with four saves. HU (1-1) is on the road for five straight games with the first at Siena Heights on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
