Nearing 25 years at the helm of the Huntington University men’s soccer program, Russ Lawson is stepping down to become the U17 and U19 head coach at Hoosier Premier Academy out of Indianapolis.

“We want to thank Russ for his exceptional dedication and service to HU over the past 24 years,” said HU Athletic Director Lori Culler. “His leadership of the men’s soccer program has not only produced competitive teams but also produced quality young men who make a difference in the community through service as representatives of Christ.

“We are deeply grateful for the lasting impact he’s made on both our institution and his athletes.”

Lawson’s relationship with HU spans nearly three decades, with his first four years spent as a student-athlete. Lawson was an all-conference soccer and baseball player on some of the most successful teams in program history for both sports. 

As a coach, Lawson has built one of the top programs in the Crossroads League. In the past decade, the Foresters averaged ten wins per year, which included going 15-5-3 in 2019. As the Crossroads League Tournament Champions, his 2019 squad earned a trip to the NAIA National Tournament. It was HU’s second straight appearance to the big dance.

Lawson’s players over the last ten years have earned two NAIA All-American accolades and 18 All-Conference praises, which includes 2017 Midfielder of the Year Matheus Louzada, 2019 Defender of the Year Jake Erlandson, 2021 Defender of the Year James Lighton, and 2023 Newcomer of the Year Sam Dolobaipu.

“This has been an amazing journey and wouldn’t have been possible without the love and support of my family,” said Lawson. “I also want to thank my peers and administration over the decades. You have all been class acts in the profession, and it has been an honor to serve alongside. It has also been an honor to serve the student body, and particularly my student-athletes over the years. HUMS will forever be in my heart!”

Hoosier Premier Academy is an MLS NEXT member club founded in 2024 through the collaborate efforts of Indy Premier and Hoosier FC.
