WOMEN’S SOCCER
Opening day of league play did not disappoint for the HU women’s soccer team. The hosts scored back-to-back goals within a 60-second span just after halftime that they were able to ride out for a 2-0 win over Goshen Saturday afternoon at King Stadium.
After generating five shots to the Leaf’s two in the opening 45 minutes, the Foresters got their pay-off seven minutes in the second period when Sophie Shepherd, from the left side, crossed a ball in front of the box for an easy tap-in by Katie Hooley. It’s the sophomore forward’s second goal of the season, the fifth of her HU career.
Caroline Shepherd also found back netting for the second time this season shortly after when she outsprinted her defender to find herself 1v1 with the keeper who she nutmegged for the game’s final score.
Shepherd’s insurance goal was the last shot her team would log but it proved more than enough as HU locked down defensively to hold their guests scoreless for the rest of the afternoon. All five of Huntington’s wins have been shutouts.
Ireland Aerni earned the win in net. The junior keeper finished with three saves. The Foresters (5-3-1, 1-0-0) are at Bethel on Wednesday with opening kick slated for 6:00 p.m.
