For both teams, emotions went from one extreme to the next within a matter of minutes Wednesday night at King Stadium where the HU men’s soccer team finished in a 1-1 stalemate with UM-Dearborn. Three of Huntington’s four matches this season have ended in a draw.

All of the excitement happened in the final 12 minutes of the contest with Huntington scoring first. Pedro Borgess was the driving force behind the goal when he slotted a ball across the box forcing Dearborn’s center back to make a play that resulted in an own goal. HU’s elation in the 78th minute turned somber six minutes later when the Wolverines equalized for a 1-1 deadlock that stuck.

HU’s goal was only a matter of time as they proved the aggressors more often than not throughout the evening as evidenced by outshooting their guests 12-5 which included six shots on frame to UMD’s two. Dearborn had gone nearly 60 minutes without a shot on goal, but their perseverance paid off compliments of Mohammed Ibrahim’s late game heroics to find back netting with four minutes remaining.

“Obviously this was a hard fought match. I thought we did a lot of things really well in regard to our possession and taking advantage of what Dearborn gave us,” said Coach Russ Lawson. “We were pressing all night but didn’t have that answer until the 78th minute.

“The disappointment, which overshadows all the good that took place tonight, was that we couldn’t see the game out after giving up the equalizer in the 86th minute. But I know our guys are committed to using this game as a motivator. We’ll be better for it in the long run.”

With this tie, the Foresters move to 1-0-3. Lawson’s squad is back at King Stadium on Saturday to host Holy Cross at 2:00 p.m.
