The HU baseball team got off to a great start in league play by wrapping up the regular season sweep over Spring Arbor Monday afternoon with two wins, 15-4, 9-5, at Forest Glen. The Foresters, with their first two wins over SAU on Thursday, are now 10-5 overall, 4-0 in CL action.

Matt Wolff was a handful for the Cougars in the opener. He knocked in a run each time he stepped up to the plate highlighted by a solo shot in the sixth. His other run-scoring shots included a single, double and sac fly with a triple the only missing piece from hitting for the cycle.

Jordan Malott came up big at the plate with one mighty swing, a three-run dinger, in the second that gave his team a permanent lead of 4-1. Between the twosome, they accounted for nearly half of HU’s offensive firepower.

Max Moser rounded out a trio of homers for Frame’s crew. He finished with three hits on the afternoon as did Ian McCutcheon whose repertoire included a two-run single. There was no shortage of weapons at the plate as Sebastian Kuhns,  Jarret Gray and Langston Ginder each pounded out run-scoring base pokes to join in on the 11-run thrashing.

Noah Arbuckle was credited with the win on the bump. He tossed the first 4.1 innings and gave up nine hits, four runs, three earned, and a walk before Adam Oxley threw 2.2 frames of scoreless relief.

While the nightcap saw Huntington nearly double up the Cougars by game’s end, it wasn’t indicative of how the game unfolded. HU opened up a 3-0 lead in the top of the first but by the third, Spring Arbor, the home team on the scoreboard since the twin bill was originally to be played at their place, had evened it up. It was the first of two ties and two lead changes before Huntington finally exploded for four runs in the extra inning to take control.

The Foresters took advantage of anything and everything the Cougars handed them which included two hit batters, two walks and a wild pitch. Combine that with three stolen bases and two hits including a two-run triple by McCutcheon and it added up to plating four runs for the win.

Wolff continued to give SAU fits, this time working in twos…2-for-2 at the plate, two RBI and two walks. Satchell Wilson got in on the action by collecting three hits, which included an RBI-single, and scoring twice.

Grant Simmons was one of three pitchers to take a turn on the mound for HU. He offered 2.2 innings of hitless, scoreless relief to close out the game for the win, walking one and fanning two along the way.

The Foresters are back in action over the weekend to host Saint Francis on Friday and Saturday.
