HU Fulbright Scholars Present Results

Date: Tuesday March 7, 2023
Time: 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Venue: Zurcher Auditorium

Mark Fairchild, PhD, professor of Bible and religion, will present the results of his Fulbright Senior Scholar Research, carried out during 2021-2022 in Turkey.

Fairchild undertook excavations at an underwater basilica in Iznik (ancient Nicea). Nicea is the site of Christianity’s first ecumenical council, known as the First Council of Nicea. His evidence suggests that the submerged basilica was the place where over three hundred leaders of the early church met with the emperor Constantine, culminating in the confessional statement known as the Nicene Creed. Fairchild published a report on the discovery of the basilica in the Biblical Archaeology Review in 2018 and will update the campus community with more recent results.

Additionally, HU student Zachariah Lail will provide an update on his Fulbright Student research. Mr. Lail performed research on esports at Toronto Metropolitan University in Canada.

Please inform your students about this historic event (two HU Fulbright scholars in one year) and encourage them to attend. The event is approved for spiritual formation credit. If you would like attendance signup sheets, send an email to Kevin Drury (kdrury@huntington.edu).
