INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
For the first time in Huntington history, the women’s track and field program swept the NAIA national weekly indoor honors as announced earlier today.
After claiming both conference T/F Athlete of the Week praises on Monday, Destiny Copeland and Addy Wiley garnered national attention by monopolizing the NAIA weekly honors too.
Copeland was tabbed the NAIA Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for picking up a pair of first-place finishes in jumps at Indiana Tech’s Warrior Indoor Invitational on Friday. Her winning leap in long jump of 5.87 meters is also the top jump in the NAIA this season.
The grad transfer claimed her second blue ribbon in triple jump with a mark of 11.49 meters. She currently ranks #1 in the NAIA based on her 12.43-meter performance at the Strive for Greatness Invitational in December. Copeland is the HU record-holder in both events.
Freshman Addy Wiley dominated the middle distance events over the weekend at the Doug Edgard Indoor Track to be name the NAIA Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week. The Huntington rookie needed just two hours to post three wins, each the fastest on record in the NAIA this season.
Highlighting her performance was running the 600 meters in 1:29.77 which proves the fastest-known time in NAIA history. Her next win came in the 800 meters where she ran a 2:09.76 which is the fourth fastest time in the NAIA record books. Twenty minutes later she won the 1,000 meters in 2:51.56 which places her eighth on the all-time NAIA list.
Next up for the Foresters is the GVSU Bill Clinger Classic on January 27.
