MEN’S BASKETBALL

After suffering a disappointing loss to Taylor earlier in the week, the #RV HU men’s basketball team took it out on Mount Vernon (4-6, 0-4) Saturday afternoon by handing their hosts an 81-65 loss. Roads wins don’t come easy in the Crossroads League with today’s victory proving the Foresters’ first in Ariel Arena since Coach Alford took over the reins in 2020.

Lane Sparks had the best game of his young career by erupting for 30 points. The 6-3 sophomore missed just three shots on the day which included burying four of his five three-pointers. He took charge of the final six minutes of the first half to turn things around for the Foresters.

With his team facing a 25-20 deficit, Sparks dropped two triples and connected on two traditional three-point plays to account for 12 of his team’s final 25 points of the first frame to send HU into break up 45-33.

The double-digit disparity was there to stay as HU ballooned their advantage to as many as 21 with four minutes remaining before settling for the 16-point win. With this win, Huntington improves to 8-2 on the year which includes a 3-1 record in league play. All eight of their wins have been by double digits.

In addition to Sparks’ 30 points, the Foresters also got double-digit production from Ben Humrichous (14), Zach Goodline (11) and Mitchell Wilson (11). All eleven of Wilson’s points came in the opening half.

Kade Ruegsegger paced the Cougars with 16 points while two bench players in Trent Koning and Carter Pline added 15 and ten points respectively.

HU is on the road again Wednesday to tip-off with UNOH at 7:30 p.m.
