The Huntington University OTD program in Arizona was delighted to host Dr. Sofia Vikstrom of Karolinska Institutet in Sweden as a guest lecturer. Dr. Vikstrom spoke to our first- and second-year cohorts about occupational therapy from a global perspective. She highlighted the different health system structures between American and European nations and specifically discussed the distinct value occupational therapists offer. Dr. Vikstrom explained occupational therapists are highly regarded in Sweden in a variety of non-traditional settings compared to a more medical model profession in the U.S.

Dr. Vikstrom is a well-published qualitative researcher and investigator primarily focusing her expertise as an occupational therapist in the realm of participatory action or design thinking-oriented improvements to health care organizations. Her work has contributed to process improvements in skilled nursing facilities, geriatric clinics, and educational settings. We feel so honored to have had this amazing opportunity to learn from such a wonderful advocate of our profession!
