The Huntington golf teams kicked off the spring portion of their schedule by heading to Myrtle Beach for the Showdown at Legends hosted by Lindsay Wilson where the women placed tenth and the men finished eighth.

The Forester women shot better each round on the way to tallying a three-round total of 1125 (382-377-366). Danielle Tinsley led HU with a 34th-place score of 263 (96-85-82). Abby Sheehan was next for Coach Patrick Davis’ crew by firing a 287 (98-98-91) for 52nd place.

Three strokes and two spots back was Lauren Slottke with a 290 (94-98-98). Lexy Turpchinoff posted a 292 (94-96-102) for 55th place while Katie Springer added a 297 (100-102-95) to finish 56th.

Playing as an individual, Akira Seals turned in a 315 (102-105-108).

“We definitely enjoyed our time in Myrtle Beach,” said Coach Davis. “We haven’t been able to practice much outside so we focused on course management and putting together a string of good holes. I fee like we all achieved that goal this week.”

William Carey claimed the title with 924 followed by Cumberland (949), Lindsey Wilson (951), Truett McConnell (960), Cumberlands (970), Campbellsville (986), Taylor (1004), Morningside (1016), Georgetown (1052), HU (1125) and Tennessee Southern (1238).

On the men’s side, after posting a 329 and 331 in the first two rounds, the Foresters saved their best for last by carding a 313 in the final round on the way to a total score of 973. Colby Martin finished 21st for Coach Connor Dwyer’s squad with a 235 (80-78-77).

Peyton Richmond was next for HU with a 237 (80-80-77) for 25th place. David Beck shot a 246 (78-89-79) for 36th place and rounding out the Foresters’ scoring was Chance Bressler in 44th place with a 255 (91-84-80).

Injury forced Quin Edwards to withdraw while Kaleb Ketchum (83-86-80—249) and Carter Roseboom (83-89-81—253) played as individuals.

“I am really proud of the way we finished,” said Coach Dwyer. “The boys fought really hard this week. It was tough because this was their first time playing outside and many of our competitors have played multiple tournaments.

“We improved quite a bit from day one to day two. We still have some adjustments we need to make as we move into the season but the boys are motivated to improve as the season progresses.”

Coastal Georgia took home the men’s title with an 888 followed by Lindsey Wilson (908), William Carey (914), Taylor (915), Tennessee Southern (925), Cumberlands (936), Kentucky State (965), HU (973) and Georgetown (973).

Next up for the HU women is the Grace Invitational on April 5 while the HU men are back in action for the Garn Championship on March 28-29.
