BOWLING

The HU bowling teams were back in action for the Kegel/ISBPA Collegiate Classic, their first Tier 1 of the new semester and second biggest tournament of the season. The format had teams bowl five team games on Saturday and 20 Baker games on Sunday.

The HU men claimed 27th out of 68 teams while the women finished 41st out of 57 teams.

The Forester men, competing with only five players, bowled well on Saturday to finish with 4,868 pins for a five-game average of 194.7 and the 31st spot heading into Sunday. Baker play served Shockey’s crew well as they posted a score of 3,888 ( 194.4/game average) to move up four spots with a final total of 8,756 .

Derek Leyba led the individual efforts with a 73rd place finish out of 336 individual bowlers. He totaled 1,037 for five games for a 207.4 average.

“The scoring pace was a lot higher than we would like to see,” said Coach Mike Shockey. “We were short-handed on Saturday, but the guys fought through it really well.

“We shot spares well overall. We just could not match the strike percentages of some of the other teams.”

The Huntington women shot 4,191 (167.6 per game average) on day one to finish in 46th place. The Foresters made strides on Sunday by tallying 3,422 pins in Baker player for an average of 171.1.  Their 7,613 total bumped them up five places.

Amber Elliott led the women’s individual efforts with a score of 1,026 for a five-game average of 205.2 which placed her 23rd out of 356 bowlers.

“Sydney Fahrer and Katie Reyes deserve some recognition for their ability to be ready to bowl on a last-minute notice,” said Shockey. “Both Sydney and Katie were ready to go and made significant contributions over the weekend when we really needed them.”

The Foresters are back at this weekend for a pair of Crossroads League tournaments in Indianapolis.
