The Huntington golf program had strong performances over the weekend at the Battle of Blackthorn with the women finishing 4th and the men 7th respectively.

On the women’s side, Danielle Tinsley (88-80) and Kira Moore (83-85) led the Foresters both carding a 168 for the weekend and tying for 16th place overall.  As a team the women shot 350 for both days and a grand total of 700 for the tournament.

“The women showed a lot of grit this weekend at Blackthorn,” said Coach Rick Sholund. “We started slowly in round one and could not get it turned around. It was a battle all day and I thought they did a good job of bouncing back from bad holes.”

Other scores for HU included Abby Sheehan (89-92–181) and Katie Springer (90-93–83)

“These ladies are working hard and focused on the right things,” said Sholund. “The results will come.

“Danielle did a great job of bouncing back in round and put herself in position to post a great score. A couple of mistakes late in the round hurt the final score but she played well all day. She has improved tremendously and is a great competitor. She sets a great tone for our team. They all fought for every stroke in both rounds, and I love that about this group.”

On the men’s side, freshman Quin Edwards had a great weekend leading the Foresters, firing a five-over par 149 (76-73) for the tournament. Huntington shot a total of 619 for the weekend with a first round total of 313 and 306 in the second.

“I am really proud of Quin Edwards with his 11th place finish in his third college tournament,” said Sholund. “He is loaded with talent, and we are excited to watch him develop his golf game.”

Peyton Richmond as well had an impressive weekend for HU scoring a total of 156 (80-76) for 28th place.

“Peyton has come in with a great mindset and has been close to putting some good scores together,” said Sholund. “With his 76 in round two he should be gaining confidence in what he can do at this level.”

The Foresters were rounded out by David Beck (79-78–157), Colby Martin (79-79–158) and Chance Bressler (79-79–178).

“We still have a lot of work to do but I am really excited for this team,” said Coach Sholund. “We have a week off to get ready for Purgatory. I am sure the guys will stay focused and positive heading into that event.”

The Foresters have an off weekend before hitting the links next again in the IWU Invitational at Purgatory Golf Club on October 8-9.
