MEN’S GOLF

The Huntington men’s golf team opened its season at IU Kokomo’s Rock Hollow Invitational where they placed ninth out of 12 teams by firing a 649 (323-326).

“There was a lot of positives for the guys at Rock Hollow,” said Coach Rick Sholund. “This was a difficult golf course with winds, fast greens and playing long. It was a good test for them.

“Our young guys showed what they are capable of and will get more consistent as they get more comfortable. I’m really proud of them.”

The two-day event saw David Beck turn in a 13-over-par 157 (79-78) to pace Sholund’s crew with his 8th-place finish. Colby Martin (84-83) and Peyton Richmond (78-89) each post a 167 for a share of 39th place.

“Dave finished with a top ten to start the year,” said Sholund. “He’s been working hard on his game, and this was a solid start. As he continues to grow in his decision making, he will put himself in that position more often. I’m excited to see him playing well.”

Chance Bressler (84-85) came in next for the Foresters with a 169. Mitchell Wilson was one stroke back at 170 (82-88) while Hank Pulver (87-96) carded a 183.

Overall, Sholund was encouraged for what the season holds. “I was excited to see that we put ourselves in position to chase down a win after round one, even though we weren’t happy with how we played. That’s a good sign. We made some big mistakes early in round two and showed some of our youthfulness in thinking about things that have no place on the course.

“That leads to mistakes, and on a course like Rock Hollow in those conditions, we were exposed by it. They will learn will grow from it, and our player leaders will learn how to navigate it as well. I believe they will take steps on that next week at Timber Ridge in Lansing.”

Next up is the Bill Bockwitz Classic on September 20-21.
