VOLLEYBALL

With COVID forcing a shortened fall season, the HU volleyball team (3-15) got back on the court Friday night for their first of four matches this spring. Playing against former HU assistant Josh Kreiner’s UNOH squad, the Foresters lost in three, 29-27, 25-18, 25-15, at the Garage.

With just seven suited up, Herber and crew didn’t let their small roster faze their ability to compete. After 15 ties and eight lead changes in the first set, the Racers, in extra points, finally outlasted their guests for the W. Despite coming up short, HU still managed a slight kill advantage, 13-12, in the opening set. The next two sets saw UNOH grab an early lead and never give it up.

Tya Bynum posted a match-high seven kills on 13 swings for an impressive .462 hitting percentage. Anna Lewis added six kills while Megan Horton and Lindsay Ingenito put down four apiece. Morgan Robrock orchestrated the offense by handing out 21 assists. Sam Gray anchored the defense with 12 digs while Abby Robinson pitched in seven.

“This match showed us our areas of growth as we continue to train this spring season,” said Coach Kelsey Herber. “We have a sense of direction moving forward and will continue to work towards our goal of laying a foundation for our upcoming fall season.”

On playing against her former assistant, Herber was very complimentary. “I’m proud of Josh for the program he is building at UNOH. We are cheering him on moving forward.”

HU is back in action next Saturday for a tri-match in Grand Rapids where they will play Aquinas and Spring Arbor.
