WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
In a Crossroads League clash, the Huntington women’s basketball team suffered an 87-71 loss to #4 Marian Saturday afternoon at the MU Physical Education Center.
The Foresters didn’t back down to one of the nation’s powerhouses, putting up more points than any other CL team this season. Seventy-one points is the second highest point total MU has allowed this year, second only to #9 Indiana Tech who posted 75 points against Marian back in November. The Knights entered the game giving up just over 57 points per outing.
HU knocked down nine long balls to Marian’s four. Behind a 6-for-10 shooting display from Emily Seboe, the Foresters scorched the nets to the tune of 56.3 percent from deep. Huntington also dropped in 16 of its 19 free throws for 84.2 percent while the Knights finished 9-for-16 from the line.
While Marian nabbed the lead for good midway through the first quarter, the Foresters never let their hosts too far out of sight. It was a six-point difference at the first break after which the Knights padded their advantage by another five heading into break for a halftime score of 43-32. The second half saw Huntington play within five points of MU so while the hosts outscored Culler and crew each quarter, it was never by more than two scores.
Seboe finished with a game-best 24 points to go along with a game-leading eight rebounds. Sam Vaughn added 19 points. Alexandria Bope totaled 11 points and five boards.
The Knights landed seven players in double figures behind 17 from Imani Guy. Shanyce Makuei and Kinnidy Garrard came off the bench to tally 12 points apiece. Abby Downard tallied 11 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. Three others in Tamia Perryman, Ella Collier and Macy Willoughby added ten points each.
With two regular season games remaining, HU is 11-8 overall, 7-7 in league play while the Knights improve to 23-4 overall and a perfect 15-0 in the conference. The Knights have racked up 17 straight wins.
The Foresters travel to Goshen on Wednesday and then return to Platt Arena on Saturday to host Grace.
