Playing in its final varsity event of the fall, the HU golf program competed in the IWU Invitational at Purgatory Golf Club where the women finished 6th and the men finished 7th.

The two-day 36-hole event featured Alexandria Maris firing a 257 (87-83-87) to lead the HU women’s team with her 22nd place finish. Danielle Tinsley posted a 264 (85-95-84) for 28th place while Lexy Turpchinoff turned in a 277 (96-95-86) for the 31st spot. Abby Sheehan wrapped up HU’s scoring with a 34th place score of 281 (93-91-97). Katie Springer added a 293 (96-97-100).

“The winds and fast greens proved to be difficult,” said Coach Sholund. “We have seen those conditions twice this fall and are getting better at managing them. I see confidence growing in our players and I believe this fall has given them a good look at what we need to focus on heading into offseason.

“Lexy (39) and Danielle (38) both finished the fall in strong fashion by overcoming the conditions and posting very competitive scores on their last nine. This certainly helps them know what they are capable of on any course. As a team, we need to play with more confidence and those results should prove something to the whole team.”

Taylor took home the team title with a 932 followed by IWU (953), Cumberlands (961), Marian (982), Spring Arbor (1038) and HU (1079).

On the men’s side, Chance Bressler had a solid outing by shooting a 242 (76-80-86) to pace HU and finish 30th overall. David Beck finished three strokes back with a 245 (81-79-85) for 33rd place while Carter Roseboom turned in a 247 (81-84-82) to grab a share of the No. 35 spot.

Sholund continues to like what he sees in Bressler. “Chance led the way in the first two rounds with a 76 and 79. He has the tools needed to score at this level and play better more consistently and is ready to focus on that in the offseason.”

Rounding out Huntington’s scoring was Hunter Jones in 39th place with a 256 (88-83-85). Dillon McFaddin added a 262 (90-84-88).

“The guys overall did a good job of limiting mistakes in the first two rounds,” said Sholund. “We let it get a way a bit in the third.

“They have made strides in their short game and decision making the last couple of weeks. They are starting to focus on the right things in practice and it shows on the course. We still have a few too many big holes and need to do a better job of closing rounds out.”

Taylor edged out Marian by a stroke for the team title with a 902. Cumberlands finished 3rd with a 904 followed by Saint Francis (920), IWU (924), Spring Arbor (935) and HU (990).

The only event left on this fall’s schedule is a women’s JV match with Saint Francis on October 24.
