The HU golf program was back in action earlier this week to play in the Harbor Shores Intercollegiate hosted by Bethel where the men placed fourth and the women took fifth. with a team score of 686 (333-353).

The Forester men were led by Carter Roseboom (82-85) and David Beck (78-89) who each turned in a 167 for a share of 11th place out of 25 golfers.

“David was in position after round one and struggled to manage the greens in round two and Carter was in position for a strong tournament but had a tough final four holes,” said Coach Sholund. “It’s good to see them in a position for top 10’s.

“As they put themselves in that position more consistently, they will learn to finish strong.  This team is very young.”

Chance Bressler turned in a 175 (85-87). Hunter Jones carded a 182 (88-94) while Colby Martin posted a 193 (101-92).

“The scores do not indicate how well I thought the guys played,” noted Coach Sholund. “From tee to green, they are really starting to improve. Harbor Shores is constant test with the wind and greens.

“We certainly learned a lot about making the right decisions and leaving the ball in the right spots. When we did that we scored well. When we didn’t our recovery was poor. As a team we are making too many unforced errors around the greens.”

Olivet Nazarene took home the title with a 625 followed by Spring Arbor (626), Bethel (653), HU (686) and Concordia (696).

On the women’s side, Alexandra Maris slid in at No. 10 by firing a 177 (93-84). Katie Springer (96-97–193) and Lauren Slottke (98-97–195) finished within two strokes of each other to place 20th and 21st respectively out of a field of 38 golfers.

Danielle Tinsley took 24th with a 198 (95-103) while Abby Sheehan finished with a 210 (109-101) for 32nd place.

“This was a tough test for our women,” noted Sholund. “They had not seen the course, so it was a great challenge for them. Overall, we learned a lot and had good stretches of holes but in the end the big numbers hurt us.

“They will learn to turn those into bogies instead of letting a hole get away. Alex had a strong turnaround in the second round showing her senior leadership of how to manage on a tough course. I’m proud of how this team competes for every shot and stays in the round all the way through, good or bad.”

Bethel sat atop the leaderboard with a 650 followed by Olivet Nazarene (694), Spring Arbor (730), Lawrence Tech (733), HU (761), Cornerstone (801) and Concordia (862).

Huntington stays local this weekend to compete in the Battle of the Henge at Stonehenge in Winona Lake on October 9-10.
