Test Optional

HU is moving to test-optional admissions starting with the incoming class of fall 2021. That means students can be admitted without an SAT or ACT score. Instead of a test score, we will be reviewing their high school transcript, essay, and other items which may help us evaluate their potential to be a successful HU student such as recommendations, extracurricular involvements, etc.

Curious why we made the switch?

Due to the pandemic, high school students are finding it difficult to sit for a standardized test. SAT and ACT tests were largely cancelled March through June. Testing sites are opening back up now, but space is still limited due to social distancing requirements. Delaying acceptances for students who haven’t had the opportunity to test would create significant recruitment challenges, particularly with most of our competitor institutions making the switch to test-optional.

Additionally, at HU we have discovered that GPA and academic record is probably more indicative of the likelihood of retention than test scores. This, in addition to the longstanding conversation in academia regarding racial bias in standardized testing, was a major factor in the decision.
