MEN’S SOCCER
It was déjà vu for the HU men’s soccer team as Wednesday night marked their second straight double OT draw for Lawson and crew. On this given night, it was a 1-1 stalemate at 1st Source Bank Field against the Grace College Lancers (0-0-1, 0-0-1).
This neighborly rivalry is well-documented. Over the last decade, these two squads have met 12 times with four ending in a stalemate while six out of the other eight matchups have been decided by a single goal.
“This was a hard fought battle that obviously went the distance,” said Lawson. “I thought we had a lot of bright spots. We had moments throughout the match where we were on the ball as did Grace. They’re a talented well-coached team with a lot of offensive weapons.
“Across the board from our backline to center mids to Gabe in goal, I thought we connected defensively and stayed organized. And we were able to create some things off the line for several quality opportunities offensively that we just weren’t able to put away. Overall, this was a tremendous effort by our boys tonight.”
Neither team could gain any sort of advantage through the first 45 minutes as evidenced by the 0-0 scored at intermission. Grace was the first to crack the scoreboard in the 65th minute but the Foresters were quick to equalize.
Five minutes after Marcelo Talamas’ goal, Hunter Jackson knotted things up at 1-1 when he put away a beautiful played ball by Pablo Garcia. For the sophomore defender, it was his first collegiate goal. It proved the last team either team would find back netting.
Grace finished with 17 shots, six on frame, to HU’s ten, four of which were on target. Four of HU’s ten shots came in the two extra periods. Corner kicks favored the Lancers 12-2.
Gabe Greenfield went the distance in net to finish with five saves.
HU moves to 1-0-2 on the year and in conference play. Next up is a home match against Saint Francis on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
