WOMEN’S TENNIS

In an epic comeback, the HU women’s tennis team kicked off Saturday’s tri-match with a 4-3 win over Spring Arbor. It was do or die for the Foresters as they found themselves down 3-0 to start the day. They needed to win all four of their final matches and Ferguson’s gritty squad did just that.

After Lanae Singleton and Lisa Colling each claimed wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, Morgan Fitzpatrick kept HU’s come-from-behind dreams alive with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), (10-5) tiebreaker win over Abby Ducharme at the top spot to knot the overall score at 3-3.

It came down to No. 4 singles where Molly Burton won a close 7-5, 6-4 match over Morgan Simmons to polish off a Cougar squad who has suffered six straight losses to Huntington.

Playing with a partial roster finally caught up to the Foresters later in the day by way of a 4-3 loss to Bethel. HU gave up a point by default at #6 singles in addition to defaulting at #3 doubles for a disadvantage right off the bat that they were unable to overcome. It’s the first time since 2012 the Pilots got the best of HU.

Morgan Fitzpatrick, Lisa Colling and Molly Burton won in straight sets in singles play to account for Huntington’s three points.

With today’s split, the Foresters are 3-1 on the year and in conference play. Next up is a trip to IWU to face the Wildcats at 9:30 a.m. and Grace at 1:00 p.m.
