MEN’S TENNIS

It’s a new era of Huntington men’s tennis under the direction of first year head coach Ignacio Poncio and opening day did not disappoint under the new skipper. The Foresters notched a pair of wins over Goshen and Saint Francis at Swinney Park Saturday afternoon to kick off the year.

HU (2-0, 2-0) entered the day having lost three straight to the Maple Leafs but that string was broken in convincing fashion with a 5-2 win on this given day. After a short break, Poncio’s crew was back at it to make quick work of the host Cougars for a 7-0 sweep.

Over the last decade, the Foresters are a perfect 11-0 against Saint Francis.

“These two wins are an awesome way to start our season. Against Goshen, it was our first win over them in a few years,” said Coach Poncio. “Today was a great confidence booster for the team and I expect us to feed off it and carry the intensity we brought today into our next match.”

Poncio and crew are back in action next weekend to host Bethel and Spring Arbor. Saturday’s matches will be the only time HU plays at home this fall.
