PONCIO NAMED NEW HU MEN’S TENNIS COACH

Huntington University athletic director Lori Culler has announced the hiring of Ignacio Poncio as the next men’s tennis coach at HU.

No stranger to campus, Poncio returns to his alma mater to head up a tennis program that has a rich tradition of success. The Argentinian native was a key cog in HU’s success during his four years in Forester green and white.

After playing at the No. 2 spot as a rookie, Poncio camped out at the top spot for the next three years, during which he guided his team to a pair of third place finishes and a fourth place finish in the league standings. He was a four-time All-Conference honoree, a feat only five other players in program history can boast.

In addition to bringing playing experience to the position, he also has several years of coaching experience under his belt. Poncio spent last season as an assistant at HU. He also has over five years of experience giving private lessons, and his resume includes coaching at Tenis Par Ciegos and Cordoba Golf Club.

“We are excited to add Ignacio as a head coach on our athletic staff,” said Culler. “As an alum of the tennis program and a former assistant coach, he brings knowledge of the team, our university and the Crossroads League which will help him hit the ground running.

“He also has great international connections to help bolster his recruiting efforts and a boatload of energy and enthusiasm that will serve him well in his new position. We are looking forward to Nacho’s leadership and how he will grow the program.”

Poncio graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2018 with a double major in business management and marketing.
