Huntington University senior Sarah Fryman has been deemed the best player in the Crossroads League as voted on by the league coaches. Her title of 2020 Crossroads League Player of the Year was officially announced by the league office earlier today.

Fryman joins a short list of Foresters to earn this prestigious award which includes Amy Bechtel in 1999 and Miranda Palmer in 2017.

Fryman’s final campaign has been one for the ages. The 5-9 forward set a new program record for points in a season with 715 on her way to racking up 1,910 career points for the third spot on HU’s all-time scoring list.

The Huntington native is currently the nation’s second leading scorer with her 23.1 points per game average. She also claims the No. 2 spot nationally for her accuracy at the charity stripe where she has knocked down 132 of her 144 attempts for 91.7 percent.

Fryman was tabbed the pre-season favorite for CL Player of the Year as well as a First Team pick, both of which have come to fruition. It’s the second straight year the Huntington native has been named to the top team.

In addition to leading her team in scoring, Fryman also tops the Foresters in rebounding by corralling 7.4 boards per night which proves the sixth best average in the league. She also handed out 2.0 dimes and swiped 1.9 steals per contest, second on the team in both categories.

Junior Sam Hammel (Anderson, Ind., Pendleton Heights HS) was also honored by the Crossroads League with a Third Team All-Conference designation. With a motor that never quits, the 5-7 point guard did a little bit of everything for Culler and company.

Hammel not only tossed in 11.3 points per game, she also swiped a league-leading 2.6 steals per night and dished out 5.2 assists which lands her the second spot among her CL peers. Of the 5.6 rebounds she pulled down regularly, 2.9 were of the offensive variety which is the third best in the Crossroads League.

Both Hammel and Fryman are the only two players in the conference this season to register a triple double. Fryman’s impressive feat came in HU’s annual Pink Out game against Grace when she went off for 28 points, 13 rebounds and ten assists while Hammel’s historic outing was at Bethel on February 15 when she logged ten points, ten rebounds and ten assists.

Fryman has banked eight double doubles this season for a three-way tie for third in the CL standings while Hammel has collected seven which puts her sixth in the league line-up.

Huntington finished the year with an overall record of 21-11.
