BASEBALL
The #11 University of the Cumberlands lived up to their national ranking in their weekend opener against the Huntington baseball team to remain perfect on the season at 16-0. The hosts took control of the afternoon by plating three runs in their first at bat on the way to an 11-2 win over the Foresters (1-5).
HU, however, kept things interesting early on by scoring their two runs in the top of the second to close the gap to just one. Jarret Gray got things started for Frame’s crew with an infield single after which Owen Young landed on first after being hit by a pitch.
The pair each advanced a base on a sac bunt and then back-to-back singles by Nick Davit and Gustavo Bonilla resulted in a run scored each at bat to make for a 3-2 to ball game. Much to HU’s chagrin, their offense expired after that as they managed just two hits the rest of the way.
The Patriots were quiet in their half of the second but then added five more runs over the next two frames to blow the game wide open. They would go on to push three more runs across home in the latter part of the contest to wrap up the lopsided win.
Alex McCutcheon was charged with the loss. In four innings on the bump, he gave up eight hits, eight runs, six of which were earned, and four walks while striking out three.
Huntington will close out the series with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1:00 p.m.
