MEN’S BASKETBALL
Playing their last regular season contest of the year, the HU men’s basketball team came up short, 88-67, to #5 Marian Saturday afternoon at the PE Center. The loss ends Huntington’s year as they finish 14-16 which includes a league record of 6-12.
Caleb Middlesworth collected 16 points, four rebounds and three assists to pace the Foresters. Konner Platt posted 15 points. The 6-2 senior wraps up his stellar career in Forester green with 1,854 career points which lands him the No. 10 spot on Huntington’s all-time scoring list.
Peyton West and Lewis Wang each tossed in eight points while West also chased down a team-best six rebounds.
Middlesworth’s jumper two minutes into the contest proved the game’s first points and HU’s only lead of the game. Marian buried a three on the next possession to nab the lead and never let it go.
While the Knights stayed on top the rest of the way, things remained close through the bulk of the first frame. With just under two minutes remaining in the period, only five points separated the two teams, 35-30, but all that changed by halftime. Marian blanked their hosts over the final 1:47 to distance themselves 44-30 by the break. Unfortunately, HU couldn’t make up any ground in the final 20 minutes to make for the lopsided final.
The Foresters didn’t have an answer for the Knights’ offensive firepower. The hosts shot 50.0 percent from the field which included going 14-for-29 from downtown. When they weren’t airing out the long ball, they were taking it to the hole as evidenced by getting to the line 18 times to HU’s six. Marian also committed half as many TOs as their visitors.
Nick Rogers led four Knights in double figures with 16 points. Cameron Wolter added 15 while Tyrie Johnson and Jonathan Nwankwo chipped in 13 points apiece.
