WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The visiting #RV HU women’s basketball team collected its second win of the year over Goshen (8-17, 1-12) Wednesday night, 70-57, to complete the regular season sweep over the Maple Leafs. It’s the Foresters sixth straight win over GC.
Sarah Fryman exploded for a career-best 36 points to top all scorers. Tonight’s scoring frenzy moved the 5-9 senior past Becky Stump on HU’s all-time scoring list into the No. 4 spot with 1,744 career points. She also ripped down a game-best 11 rebounds for her sixth double double of the season.
While Fryman’s offensive firepower was striking, HU’s defense in the second half was just as inspiring. The Foresters gave up a mere 23 points in the final 20 minutes to turn a six-point halftime lead of 40-34 into a double-digit victory. It’s the 11th time this season Culler and crew have handed an opponent a 10+ point loss. On this given night, they limited their hosts to 8-for-28 shooting (28.6 percent) in the second half and forced nine TOs after intermission.
The Foresters enjoyed a permanent lead midway through the second quarter on Sara Doi’s freebie that broke the game’s sixth and final tie of the night for a 26-25 tilt. While the visitors held the upper hand the rest of the way, Goshen never let HU stray too far in front. Sam Hammel finally gave her team a little wiggle room when she slashed her way through the lane with 4:22 to go in the contest for a 61-51 difference.
HU never gave up their double-digit lead after that. They would go on to extend the advantage to as many as 16 on Alaina Rongos’ own put back with just under 90 seconds remaining before claiming the 13-point victory.
Hammel finished with 12 points in the winning effort. Rongos and Doi added eight points apiece off the bench. Doi also dished out a game-best three assists. As a team, Huntington drained 50.9 percent of their attempts from the floor by going 29-for-57. Six times this season the Foresters have logged a field goal percentage of at least 50.0 percent.
TaNiece Chapman led Goshen with 15 points and seven rebounds. Alyson Prigge tossed in 11 of her 13 points in the first half. Graysen Cockerham added 12 points and logged seven boards to share team-high rebounding honors with Chapman.
With this win, the Foresters improve to 18-7 on the year, 7-6 in league action. With five regular season games remaining, Culler and company are tied for fifth in the CL standings with Grace. Huntington is back on the road Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. matchup with Mount Vernon.
