MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Forester men’s basketball team wrapped up the regular season sweep over Goshen Tuesday night at Gunden Gymnasium with an 82-68 road win to improve to 12-13 overall, 4-9 in league play. The W is HU’s fifth straight over the Maple Leafs.
Less than three minutes into the contest, the visitors grabbed a 7-5 lead and never trailed again. It was Caleb Middlesworth’s first of two threes within just over a minute’s time that gave his team the permanent lead. The 6-8 forward teamed up with Andrew Yoder to score Huntington’s first 14 points of the evening.
The pair would go on to account for over half of HU’s offensive production with Yoder tallying a career-best 23 points and Middlesworth racking up 22. Peyton West rounded out the Foresters’ double digit scoring with 20 points. The 6-1 point also chased down a team-best eight rebounds.
With just over nine minutes left in the period, Platt and company had swelled the lead to 20 points at 30-10 which proved the game’s largest disparity. Goshen spent the latter part of the frame cutting their deficit in half for a 46-36 difference heading into the locker room. The shredding of the lead saw eight different Maple Leafs put points on the board.
GC methodically continued to chip away at their deficit to creep within four of their visitors, 62-58, with 9:11 remaining. Two possessions later, Huntington finally got back on track with four straight buckets including a long ball by Lewis Wang and an old fashioned three-point play by Yoder to bolster a 10-2 run to up the lead back to double digits at 72-60.
At that point there was six minutes to go. Goshen would trim it to seven twice shortly after, but Yoder buried a trey to spur a 7-0 run that closed out the game. The senior guard finished 9-for-11 from the field and made all three of his freebies in addition to posting seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks for one of the most productive games of his career.
As a team, the Foresters shot 51.6 percent from the floor which included going 9-for-22 from deep. It’s the tenth time this year HU has canned at least half of their shot attempts. It was also the tenth time Platt’s crew tallied single digit TOs as they finished the night with just seven.
The loss leaves the Maples Leafs (4-21, 0-13) still searching for their first league win and makes for their eleventh straight loss. HU returns to action on Saturday with a road trip to Mount Vernon.
