WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The #22 Huntington women’s basketball team opened up the Puerto Rico Clasico with a 64-27 win over the University of Sacred Heart Monday afternoon at the Coliseo Mario Quijote Morales.
Defense was the key to the lopsided affair as the Foresters limited their hosts to single digits in each of the four quarters. The opening ten minutes proved the biggest disparity as the score stood at 24-5 after the first quarter. It was a 39-13 difference by the midway point before 37 points separated the two teams by the final buzzer.
The 12 Foresters who hit the hardwood found their way into the scoring column with Sarah Fryman leading the pack with 15 points, eight of which came in the opening three minutes of the third quarter. Erin Mohr poured in a season-high 13 points to go along with a game-best six rebounds and four assists. Sam Hammel led the game in assists with seven and topped HU with three steals.
Ninoshka Febles and Marileliz Martinez led the Puerto Rican-based team with nine and seven points respectively while Marie Dilbert finished with a game-best five steals.
This trip to Puerto Rico is the first for the Forester program as Culler and crew move to 11-2 on the year. HU is back at it tomorrow to play the University of Puerto Rico Metropolitan at 7:00 p.m. ET.
