HU track and field coach Joel Childs took a partial squad to Indiana Tech’s Strive for Greatness Invitational on Saturday where the Foresters hit four A standards and two B standards in addition to setting three new school records.
The Huntington women accounted for all six of the national qualifying standards. The 4×800 meter team made up of Mara McFarland, Molly Mitchell, Aspen Dirr and Hannah Stoffel automatically qualified for nationals by clocking in at 9:08.29.
In addition to punching her ticket to nationals as a member of the 4×800 meter relay team, Stoffel also qualified for her fourth individual race by winning the 800 meters in 2:10.96. Her time also proved a new school record.
Three other Foresters had standout performances in the 800 meters. Dirr (2:15.13) and Mitchell (2:17.63) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively while Olivia Von Gunten (2:25.48) ran a PR to claim 7th. Dirr’s time was an A Standard while Mitchell’s time hit the B Standard.
Dirr claimed yet another A Standard, upping her total to seven, by clocking in with a winning time of 10:08.29 in the 3000 meters while Saige Norris posted a 10:26.77 to finish second and punch her ticket to nationals with a B Standard.
For the Forester men, Cam Worsham (8.45) and Noah Bise (6.93 meters) each bettered their best to break their own school record in the 60 meter hurdles and long jump respectively. Haile Stutzman brought home the only first place finish on the men’s side by winning the 3000 meters in 8:49.30. Kyler Bourne established a new PR in pole vault with his mark of 4.22 meters which moves him up to the sixth spot in the HU record books.
The Foresters head back to Purdue Fort Wayne on January 18 for the Fort Wayne Duals.
