BOWLING
The HU bowling program was in action over the weekend for the second WHAC Jamboree of the season. The tournament featured four regular games and four baker games. The HU women showed great improvement with a 4th place finish out of 13 teams while the men finished 9th.
“The WHAC conference is largest and toughest NAIA conference in the country,” noted Coach Shockey. “We are seeing improvement every day in practice and at every tournament. The team has a commitment to the process of getting better and have embraced the tough workouts and practices in order to get better. Having a team like this makes coaching exciting and a whole lot easier.”
The highlight of the tournament was the performance of the Forester women’s JV team that contended for the JV title before conceding at the very end. Huntington finished 2nd out of seven teams with a total score of 5,700 pins, just 62 pins behind the winning Lourdes squad. They were led by Hannah Bond and Haley Tucker who both had a 177.50 per game average and finished in a tie for 25th in the final individual standings.
The HU varsity posted a score of 6,357 for their first top five finish of the year. Amber Elliott led Shockey’s crew with a singles score of 801 for a 200.25 per game average. She finished 6th individually to miss making the All-Tournament Team by just 17 pins.
“The ladies did a great job of following the shot as it transitioned thru the day,” said Shockey. “Even when the shot completely went away, they continued to communicate and grind out solid games.”
On the men’s side, the Foresters registered 6,693 pins behind Austin Schultz who averaged a 191 to claim 21st place individually.
“The guys have really struggled with consistent shot making this season and early in the day it appeared to be same story,” said Shockey. “During the baker games, the guys came out of the slump and started turning in some of the games of the day.
“I think that at the end of the season we will be able to look back at this tournament as the point where we turned the corner and started showing our potential at tournaments and not just practice.”
Next up for the Foresters is the National Collegiate Team Match Games in Fairview Heights (Ill.) on November 30 – December 1.
