The HU golf program made the short trip to Stonehenge in Winona Lake to compete in the Battle at the Henge over the weekend hosted by Grace College where the men claimed seventh and the women finished ninth.

The Forester men turned in a 651 (321-330) with David Beck pacing Sholund’s crew by carding a 79 both days for a 16-over-par 158 for the 23rd spot out of 50 golfers.

Logan De Maa was a stroke back at 159 (80-79) for 24th. Chance Bressler shot a 167 (84-83) while Otto Bjartmarz rounded out the scoring with a 169. The Iceland native fired a 78 in the first round to post HU’s lowest score of the weekend. Nick Whitney added a 178 (89-89).

“Stonehenge was a good test with cold temperatures, rain and wind,” said Coach Sholund. “The guys did well with managing the conditions most of the weekend.

“We had a few slip ups to hit some big numbers, but overall those are happening a lot less. On a golf course set up with tight pins in those conditions they did well. I’m proud of them.”

Mount Vernon won the invite with a 605 followed by Spring Arbor (609), Indiana Wesleyan (618), Grace (626), Saint Francis (626), St. Xavier (647), HU (651) and IU Kokomo (653).

On the women’s side, Betsey Schroeder topped Huntington with a 16-over-par 167 (80-87) to claim 17th out of the 51-player field. Alexandria Maris turned in a 178 (95-83) for 27th place. Rachel Blauert finished one stroke back at 179 (89-90). Lexy Turpchinoff was HU’s fourth scorer with a 212 (100-112) while Katie Springer carded a 215 (107-108).

“We a had some good rounds along with a lot of good stretches,” said Sholund. “Our numbers do not indicate the progress we are making.

“This was our first event in conditions this year and it showed a bit. I saw a lot of progress around the greens and with the putters. They had a rough time putting two rounds together individually but the ladies should be gaining confidence in themselves right now. I am proud of their effort.”

Indiana Wesleyan took the women’s title with a 630 followed by Grace (634), Saint Francis (638), Spring Arbor (665), Mount Vernon (675), IU Kokomo (702), Grace B (706), Indiana Wesleyan B (706), HU (732) and Grace C (799).

The Forester men are back in action for the NAIA Midwest Invitational October 14-15 while the HU women wrap up their fall on October 25-26 at their own Shootout at Sultan’s Run.
