MEN’S SOCCER
The Forester men’s soccer team stretched their win streak to four Wednesday afternoon with a convincing 6-0 win over the visiting Cougars of Saint Francis (5-9, 1-4). The W is HU’s largest margin of victory since August of 2017 when they posted an identical score against IU East.
After settling for a 0-0 tie last year, the Foresters were not going to let history repeat itself. From the opening whistle, Lawson’s crew was on the attack with Christian Kohen getting the first pay-off 17 minutes in for his fourth goal of the season.
Four other Foresters found back netting with Eric Ocock leading the way. The sophomore forward came off the bench to finish with a pair of goals, both of which were assisted by Caleb Sexton. He scored his team’s fourth and sixth goal with his final goal, the only one of the second half, a chip shot over the USF keeper with less than 13 minutes remaining.
That wasn’t all Ocock did to help his team in the blowout as he also fed Noah Fleming for goal No. 3 to finish with five points on the day. Jake Erlandson made it five straight games with a goal when he scored on a PK to make it 2-0 while James Howard found back netting just before halftime to give his team a 5-0 advantage heading into the break.
The Foresters finished with 22 shots, half of which were on goal, while limiting the Cougars to just seven shots, three on frame. Gabe Greenfield was credited with the win in frame. He spent the first 45 minutes in goal where he tallied two saves before handing the baton to Blake Cooke who preserved the shutout. Today’s shutout is Huntington’s fifth of the year.
“We have been challenging the boys to take care of the things in front of them and today we did that,” said Coach Lawson. “This was a solid performance for us. We have things to work on but we put the ball in the back of the net six times so we’re encouraged by what we created offensively this afternoon.”
Including this fall, the Foresters have notched double digit wins three consecutive seasons. Their current record stands at 10-2-2 overall, 4-0-1 in league play. Next up is another home match on Saturday against Goshen.
