WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
HU senior Sarah Fryman headlines this year’s Crossroads League Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll as the preseason favorite for Player of the League accolades as announced by the national office earlier this afternoon.
The 5-9 forward enters this season as the league’s returning leading scorer having averaged 17.9 points per night last winter, a mark that ranked her 21st around the country. She also topped the conference and finished 5th nationally in free throw percentage by knocking down 88.2 percent of her freebies.
In addition to being a handful offensively, Fryman, a 2019 CL First Teamer, was also busy helping her team in other ways by chasing down 4.3 rebounds, handing out 1.9 dimes and swiping 1.8 steals per game last winter.
Fryman has racked up 1,195 career points to date to boast the No. 19 spot on Huntington’s 1,000 point club.
Junior Sam Hammel was also recognized by the league as a preseason Third Team All-League pick. As HU’s point guard, Hammel led the team in assists (4.0) and steals (2.9), the 4th and 2nd best in the Crossroads League respectively, while also tossing in 10.1 points per outing.
The Anderson native (Pendleton HS) returns this season as the team’s leading rebounder having pulled down 5.5 rebounds per game last year of which 2.46 were of the offensive variety, the 4th best average in the league.
Rounding out the Foresters’ honors was senior Erin Mohr (Wayne Trace HS, Payne, Ohio) being named to the preseason Honorable Mention Team. A two-year starter for Coach Culler, the 5-10 guard posted double digit points in five league games last year in addition to being assigned the opponents’ best offensive perimeter player to earn the respective of the other CL coaches.
Mohr averaged 5.3 points last year in addition to corralling 1.9 rebounds and 0.9 steals.
Coach Culler’s squad was picked to finish 4th in the league’s preseason poll with Marian claiming the top spot. The Foresters finished with an 11-7 Crossroads League record last year for a 5th place finish in the regular season standings. Huntington opens up the season by hosting No. 7 Indiana Tech on October 29 at 7:00 p.m.
