WOMEN’S SOCCER
The visiting Huntington women’s soccer team proved a handful for the #RV Indiana Wesleyan (9-1-1) Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Field where the hosts eventually walked away with a 2-1 win.
Coming into the afternoon, IWU had given up just five goals through ten matches with two of those goals coming in their season opening loss.
On this given day, both teams collected 17 shots with Lewis’ crew posting six shots on goal to IWU’s four.
Huntington kept their hosts off the board until just before halftime. The Wildcats found back netting again in the 61st minute but Bailey O’Dell kept things interesting when she halved the lead less than two minutes later. The goal was O’Dell’s third of the season.
Huntington ended up outshooting the Wildcats 3-2 the rest of the way but neither team struck again for back netting to make for the 2-1 final. Not only did HU hold IWU below their scoring average by nearly 1.4 goals, they kept within one goal of a squad that boasts just under a 3.5 goal margin of victory.
Coach Lewis continues to praise his team for their continued improvement. “We are making progress with each match. Today we played well organized and generated opportunities. We need to work on the consistency of some of our finer points and then we’ll start getting the results.
“Many players could be mentioned for their efforts today. Bailey stood out in the middle and scored a great goal. We are heading in the right direction.”
Next up for the Foresters (3-7, 0-2) is a home match against Marian on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
