Mission Moment

Lake Sno-Tip, located in the heart of our beautiful campus, is 53 years old. More impressive than its age is the legacy and visual symbolism it represents. Lake Sno-Tip is named in honor of Gene Snowden and Floyd L. “Bill” Tipmore. Both gentlemen were giants in their respective communities and deeply entrenched servants for Huntington University. Snowden served as a member on the Board of Trustees while Tipmore served as the Director of Development and Public Relations. Snowden, both a philanthropist and deeply faithful man, served in both the Indiana House of Representative and the State Senate. He also served a term as Huntington’s mayor from 1992-1996. Tipmore was a captain of the football and basketball teams at Indiana University and was a Naval World War II veteran. He also worked in Naval Intelligence at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. Tipmore continued his service as a philanthropist throughout his life as well.

Having a centerpiece on campus named after two men the caliber of Gene Snowden and Bill Tipmore reminds us of our university’s legacy. From Central College to Huntington College to Huntington University, there is a 122-year legacy for us to continue and build upon. I would like to think that our work in service to others would make both gentlemen proud. Lake Sno-Tip’s three large fountains can also help remind us of the central focus of why we do what we do. Christ. Scholarship. Service….three pillars of our mission represented and visibly on display through three fountains on our campus lake. What a great, tangible reminder we have of a legacy-filled past and exciting future built upon our mission of serving Christ through Scholarship and Service.
