The #RV HU men’s soccer team stretched its win streak to three Wednesday afternoon with a 2-1 win over Cleary University at King Stadium. The Foresters were two minutes away from another clean sheet before Ana Mohamed kept things interesting by slipping one past HU keeper Gabe Greenfield for just a one-goal difference.
Prior to Mohamed’s goal, the Foresters had gone over 340 minutes without conceding a goal.
“I thought this was another gutsy performance by our boys,” said Coach Lawson. “But credit Cleary – they’re a big physical team with several weapons. They’re organized and difficult to break down in the middle of the park.
“We made a few adjustments at halftime. We did a better job of getting on the ball which put pressure on them and it eventually paid off.”
The Foresters got five looks to the Cougars’ nine with one of HU’s shots coming off the head of Christian Kohen who found back netting far post on a scramble in the 54th minute to get his team on the board.
With just under eight minutes remaining, Jake Erlandson cushioned the lead with a PK after Kohen got taken down in the box. It went from being the cherry on top to the game-winner after Cleary finally cracked HU’s defense in the final two minutes.
“Christian got the job done for us today,” said Coach Lawson. “Chasing down lost causes pays off and that’s exactly what happened when he drew the foul that led to our penalty kick.
“Hunter Jackson also had a great game for us on the backline.”
Gabe Greenfield finished with five saves to enjoy the win in frame.
Huntington is back at King Stadium on Saturday to host Lawrence Tech at 3:00 p.m.
