Monday Mission Moment

Huntington University’s Achieving Balance in Life through Education (ABLE) Program is truly one of a kind. Serving students with special needs who are transitioning to adult life from local high schools, this program represents everything that is right about Christian higher education. As the program mission statement highlights, ABLE is “dedicated to developing, expanding, and improving inclusive higher education options for people with intellectual disabilities.” Our calling as a Christ-centered institution is to show the love of Christ to others throughout our community. John 13:34 reminds us about the importance of this love: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” God loves ALL his children, and our University sends a strong message through this program regarding the inclusiveness of God’s love to these students and their families.

The ABLE program has also created opportunities for faculty, staff, and other students around campus. Peer mentors for ABLE students develop a leadership capacity for serving others, and the entire program enriches the culture on our campus as peer connections are established and growth opportunities arise. ABLE is truly part of Huntington University, as the students and staff in this program worship during chapel, attend classes, and have a home near the Department of Education office in Loew-Brenn Hall. Quinn Fetters, current ABLE program coordinator, shares, “You can go to any college and get an education, but Huntington University grows people socially, academically, and spiritually.” This life-changing program is yet another example of Huntington University furthering our mission of serving Christ through Scholarship and Service.
