MEN’S SOCCER
In a non-conference battle with their neighbors to the northeast, the HU men’s soccer team slipped past Indiana Tech 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at King Stadium. With this win, Huntington improves to 2-1-1 on the season while the Warriors drop to 1-3.
Junior Gabe Greenfield stood tall in net to pick up his second clean sheet of the year. The junior keeper finished with three saves on the afternoon.
Offense was at a premium for both teams as combined there were only nine shots on frame. It was HU’s second to last shot of the day that finally found back netting in the low scoring affair. After Eric Ocock drew a free kick just five minutes into the second half, freshman Caleb Sexton made the most of the restart with a well-struck shot from 30 feet out for what proved the game-winner.
“We pride ourselves on restarts so to see the pay-off from that was encouraging,” said Coach Lawson. “Today was a gritty performance by the boys. Compared to our game against Madonna, I thought our attacking mentality was positive.”
Sexton finished with four shots to account for half his team’s overall shots. His goal was his first in Forester green and white.
“I feel like we can learn from this game,” said Lawson. “Tech is a talented team so I was pleased with how solid we were defensively but we have to tighten things up in the middle third. In doing so, we’ll be able to see ourselves on the ball more and we’ll be more effective in transition.”
The Foresters hit the road on Saturday to go toe-to-toe with the University of Michigan-Dearborn at 3:00 p.m.
