WOMEN’S SOCCER

The Huntington women’s soccer team played spoiler to IU Kokomo’s maiden game Wednesday night at Kokomo Municipal Stadium by handing their hosts a 5-1 loss. This is the inaugural season for IUK women’s soccer.

The win is HU’s second straight as they improve to 2-1 on the year. The visitors wasted little time building a lead that wouldn’t be challenged. Less than 20 minutes into the contest, Avery Giguere banged one home for the early 1-0 advantage. Over the next five minutes, Hannah Williams and Courtney McKown followed suit to push Huntington’s lead to 3-0.

Abby Adams closed out the first half with her team’s fourth goal in the 42nd minute to build an insurmountable lead. The Cougars got one back to open the second period and then Bailey O’Dell capped off the game’s scoring by finding back netting at the 66:39 mark for the 5-1 final.

“Once we settled into our game, we played well in the first half and put together some nice scoring opportunities,” said Coach Lewis. “To Kokomo’s credit, they came out strong in the second half to score a great goal.”

Eight of HU’s 11 shots were on frame while IU Kokomo finished with 13 shots, six of which were on target. Maddy Moan picked up the win in goal. The sophomore keeper posted five saves in just over 82 minutes after which Addalyn Brown made her debut in net to close out the match.

Lewis is excited to see his team continue to get better and better. “Overall, I am pleased with the progress the team is making. We are looking forward to Saturday’s home opener.”

The Foresters host Governors State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
