MEN’S SOCCER

Coming off one of the best seasons in program history, the #RV Forester men’s soccer team picked up where they left off by blanking Siena Heights University Tuesday night, 2-0, at O’Laughlin Stadium in their 2019 season opener.

“From start to finish, I felt like our quality showed through,” said Coach Lawson. “We controlled the middle of the park and our front four were fantastic at creating opportunities and getting numbers in the box.”

The visitors wasted little time taking control of the scoreboard. Just over ten minutes in, Jake Erlandson played a penetrating ball into Noah Fleming who battled before getting hauled down in the box to set up an easy scoring opportunity. Erlandson converted the PK for the early lead.

Lawson’s crew was back at it in the 75th minute. After intercepting a pass at midfield, Erlandson played the ball to Christian Kohen. Off the counter, Kohen flicked it to Luke Unger who slotted the keeper for goal No. 2. The game was beyond reach at that point as HU was able to ride of the W for the clean sheet.

Offensively, the Foresters generated 16 shots, seven on frame, with Erlandson, Caleb Sexton, Fleming and Unger accounting for all but two of those shots.

Gabe Greenfield earned the shutout in net. The junior keeper collected six saves in the winning effort. Huntington’s backline gave up just seven shots on the evening.

“Our back four holding mids did a phenomenal job,” said Lawson. “This was a great team effort. It positions us well for Saturday’s match against Georgia Gwinnett.”

HU (1-0) hosts the #12 Grizzlies on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
