WOMEN’S SOCCER
The 2019 season started off with a bang for the Forester women’s soccer team as an extra period was needed to determine Tuesday afternoon’s winner. HU went to battle with Madonna and after a scoreless 90 minutes, the match went to OT where the Crusaders finally cracked the scoreboard just over two minutes in for the 1-0 win.
Megan Verant took the only shot in overtime and made it count at the 2:13 mark for what proved the golden goal. Regulation saw the Crusaders generate 21 shots to HU’s four. While it wasn’t exactly what first year head coach David Lewis would have scripted, the poise and grit of his team to keep MU from finding back netting on 21 attempted shots was notable.
Freshman Alex Bryant anchored HU’s stingy defense while Maddy Moan held her own in goal for the Foresters by collecting nine saves. Offensively, Kirstin Byrd fired two shots for Huntington.
“We will continue to work on our composure and build the offensive side of our game,” noted Lewis.
Huntington is on the road again tomorrow to face the University of Michigan-Dearborn at 4:00 p.m.
