SOFTBALL

Sophomore Meghan Fretz had an epic performance Monday afternoon at Bethel to toss her first college no-hitter to guide the Forester softball team to a 4-0 win in the opener before coming up short in the nightcap 6-2.

After taking down the Pilots in order through the first four frames, Fretz’s perfect game was broken up by a dropped fly in the fifth. The only other mishap of her no no was a hit batsman in the seventh as she didn’t give up a walk while striking five of the 21 batters she faced.

As if her work in the circle wasn’t impressive enough, Fretz was also a force to be reckoned with offensively. She finished 3-for-3 at the plate which included her first four-bagger, a two-run blast, in the sixth preceded by an RBI-single in the second.

The sixth proved a big inning for HU as Kennedy Krull also let loose to clock one out of the yard for her second dinger of the year, the fourth of her career.

Things didn’t go as smoothly for Gower’s crew in the nightcap as they struggled to get their bats going. They finished with just five hits and had to have a little help from their hosts to plate both runs. Marty Harris got hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the second to get her team on the scoreboard.

Huntington’s second run came in the fourth when Denaia Rice, pinch running for Hannah Shoupe, scampered home from second on a misplayed grounder. The run gave HU a 2-1 advantage but it was short-lived as the Lancers scored four times in their half of frame to enjoy a 5-2 lead. They would add an insurance run in the fifth to wrap up the day’s scoring.

Three Foresters made an appearance on the bump with Anna Weigold tossing the fourth where she gave up seven hits and three runs to be assessed the loss.

HU moves to 8-12 on the year, 4-6 in league play. They are back in action tomorrow at #5 Marian.
