BOWLING

The Forester bowling teams were in action this weekend at the Stardust Bowl in Addison, Ill. for the Kegel/ISBPA Midwest Collegiate Classic. It marked HU’s second Tier 1 tournament of the season. The tourney consisted of five tradition team games on Saturday and 20 baker games on Sunday.

The HU women approached the weekend wanting and needing to see how ready they were for post-season. They were up for the challenge as evidenced by finishing 16th out of 61 teams. On Saturday, they totaled 4,560 pins and followed that up by adding another 3,408 pins on Sunday from baker play for a two-day total of 7,968. Brianna Cearbaugh bowled well to claim 6th place individually with a score of 1,023 (204.6/game average).

“Overall, we had a good weekend,” said Coach Shockey. “I think we know where we stand right now and have a couple weeks to come together and clean up the small details keeping us from being a dominant team.”

On the men’s side, the Foresters finished the weekend 37th out of 70 teams. On Saturday, Huntington could not find their way into making spares or stringing together enough strikes on the way to posting a score of 4,408 to find themselves near the bottom of the standings by the end of the day.

After a spirited team meeting Saturday night, the men emerged Sunday as a new team. The men scored 3,746 for 20 baker games and shot up the standing sheet to end up 37th.

“I’ll admit Saturday was frustrating for the coaches and the guys,” noted Shockey. “But Sunday we rebounded and showed that we bowl and compete with the best.

“The travel and temperatures were interesting this weekend and the team carried that onto the lanes. They certainly kept it interesting all weekend.”

Huntington is off for two weeks before competing in the Backhaul Direct Hoosier Classic on February 16-17.
